Learning at SBC - Teaching & Learning - Young Adulthood - Year 11

Year 11 students learn to juggle their increased academic workload, the formal requirements for graduation and the increased expectations of school life with the challenges of aiming for high grades, becoming more involved in House activities and proving that they are fit for College Leadership.

The theme for Year Eleven is “Responsibility”: responsibility for one’s actions, being a positive influence on others, especially caring for those less privileged and protecting the environment, both within and beyond the College.

With eyes focused on the future, many students opt for a combination of on-campus and off-campus learning, through the College’s Future Link programs in Hospitality, Sport and Recreation, Childcare and Business and Technology. A combination of four days at school and one day in the workplace leads to nationally-recognised, dual certification. Although demanding, these programs are more realistic and relevant and because they consist of on-the-job training girls learn quickly about the responsibilities of the world of work. So impressed with their achievement, workplace employer increasingly offer girls apprenticeships and on-going employment.

For girls who have yet to decide on a career pathway, guest speakers from various universities, TAFE and the Chamber of Commerce visit the College and careers seminars are conducted in order to make this decision. All girls have the opportunity of personal meetings with trained careers and transition staff to clarify their unique pathway to their aspirations.

While girls are strongly encouraged to study hard, there are also numerous activities to balance the work with fun times. Girls are involved in the Father Daughter Dinner, Fun Run, Sport Carnivals, Mercy Week, Reflection Day activities and socials.

The mantle of Student Leadership is passed from the Graduating Class to students in Year Eleven on Presentation Night in Term Four. To prepare for this, in Term Three, Year Elevens attend leadership seminars, prepare and give speeches before the whole College assembly and nominate to be elected by students and endorsed by Staff members as College Leaders. This is a rigorous process resulting in the honour of representing the College at many functions both within and beyond the College, including interstate. Successful students are offered a leadership camp, during which the responsibilities of office are discussed in greater detail and commitments obtained.
