Learning at SBC - Teaching & Learning - Young Adulthood - Year 10

The theme for Year 10 is “Choices”, and there are many choices which girls need to make.

Students now need to become more serious about their commitment to schoolwork, as they sit for formal examinations for the first time whose results will determine whether pre-requisites are met for further study and work.

Leading healthy, balanced lives is strongly recommended if we are to achieve to our maximum. To this end, Year Ten’s are encouraged to participate in a variety of events, including Swimming, Athletics, Cross-country, Inter-school Debating, Football, Cricket, Mathematics Talent quests, Mock Trial competitions for our budding lawyers.

Probably the most important choice girls need to make is what they would like to do beyond Year Ten. Do they want to apply for an apprenticeship or a traineeship? Do they want to get into the workforce as fast as possible, or delay working with a 6 year course in medicine at university?

In order to make this decision, guest speakers from various universities, TAFE and the Chamber of Commerce visit the College. Students attend Careers’ seminars and both girls and their parents benefit greatly from what has become the highly acclaimed Careers’ Expo, where over 30 exhibitors are available in the College Gymnasium to discuss diverse options.

It is not all hard work and serious decision-making. After weeks of dancing lessons with boys from Mazenod, the girls get dressed up for a highlight of the year ~ a night of fun in the decorated Gymnasium for the Year 10 Dance.

The year concludes with a Leadership Camp, which aims to prepare students for the roles and responsibilities that accompany Year 11 and 12 at the College.
