Learning at SBC - Teaching & Learning - Middle Childhood

During the Middle Childhood years of development (Years 3-6) at St Brigid’s College, a strong emphasis is placed on developing the social, emotional and academic aspects of our students’ personalities.

Socially, as children grow from Early Childhood to Middle Childhood, they usually develop a greater understanding of themselves as members of a larger community. Students’ ability to work collaboratively with their peers is explored and encouraged. To develop this important social skill of working collaboratively, activities are specifically designed by teachers that include peer group planning and decision-making, increased responsibility for organising activities and interactions with people inside and outside their classroom.

Academically a strong emphasis is placed on students exploring a wide range of varied technologies and different forms of communication. Literacy and Numeracy is a major focus and students develop a strong grasp of written language and numeric concepts. We encourage students to reflect on their learning and work practices and consider ways in which these might be improved, modified or adapted for different situations.

The learning experiences in the middle childhood years at St Brigid’s College lead students to an appreciation of both the commonality and diversity of human experience and concerns, through the daily living and giving witness of the College’s Values.
