Year One students have a jam-packed year full of new and exciting challenges. Students arrive as a flock of little people with bags on their backs almost bigger than them. The year begins by getting to know each other. Programs are based around concepts and our objective is to provide stimulating, interesting and child-centred programs with an emphasis on hands-on activities to assist children to fully understand concepts.
All children participate in a variety of specialist activities including Music, Library Studies, Physical Education, Italian Dance and Swimming. Religious Education is integrated into all areas of the curriculum.
In the study of Mathematics children explore many concepts such as time, measurement, number and space through play and exploration. Concrete materials are used in the classroom along with real-life situations.
English focuses on speaking, listening, viewing, reading and writing. The children work in a variety of settings and in small mixed groups. They also have individual work designed specifically for them. Year Four students have access to a Reading Recovery Program, which supports the literacy initiative RAISe – (Raising Achievement in Schools).
In Science children are encouraged to make and use equipment such as Wind Catchers and Rain Gauges to test different theories.
Society and Environment focuses on our College and local community. Special guests from services such as the Fire Brigade and St John Ambulance, as well as local community members enhance the learning experience.
Recycling is also a focus and the children make a worm farm and use food scraps which would normally be litter. An encouraging visit from Captain Cleanup inspires the students thirst for learning.
