Learning at SBC - Teaching & Learning - Early Childhood

Early childhood is a wonderful time and it is important that we encourage children to develop their imaginations and creativity. It is also the foundation upon which children build the rest of their lives. Teachers, assistants and peers assist parents to influence and nurture development. Our aim is to help students to enjoy life as they discover the beauty in themselves, in others, and in the world around them.

Parents are the prime educators of their children. With this in mind we are committed to establishing a strong partnership with parents so that together we provide the best opportunities for each child’s progress.

Throughout the K -2 years we aim to provide:

  • A Christ-centred environment supportive of the Catholic ethos which promotes acceptance and understanding of individual differences.
  • A stimulating, supportive and happy environment where the children will feel secure and enjoy coming to school.
  • A program that emphasises learning as an interactive process, which includes teacher-directed activities, free play and discovery learning.
  • A program that will cater for a wide range of developmental abilities and interests, and allows children to develop their potential
  • A focus on developing the ‘whole child’, socially, emotionally, linguistically, spiritually, cognitively and creatively.

Children learn from experiences and first-hand interactions with people, real things and events. Children must be actively involved in their environment for true learning to take place. They learn about the environment by interacting with it, and not by being told about it. They understand what is discovered through personal experience rather than from what is explained.

Children are natural learners. They are innately curious and motivated by their own desires to discover and make sense of their world. Each is unique in her/his manner of learning. Learning styles reflect individual strengths and experiences. Each child receives, processes and consolidates new learning in different ways.

Children’s learning is developmental. Knowledge, skills, attitudes and values are acquired gradually and grow in sophistication based on the unique experiences of the child. The best learning begins with the child’s own interests and experiences. Children need many opportunities to ask questions, investigate their own problems and gain information that is personally relevant.
