What better way to learn a language than to immerse oneself the customs and delights of the target language.
LOTE Student Exchange
Every year the language students are given the opportunity to apply for a position on an Exchange Program. The indented applicants sit a series of stringent interviews before a panel as well as complete a detailed application. Final candidates are selected according to their academic and personal performance as well as their ability to represent the College as ambassadors. As part of the program students are then sent to stay with host families during the Christmas break where they will experience first hand the lifestyle, schooling and culture of Indonesia or Italy.
Hosting Program
From July to August each year the College hosts overseas students. The exchange student, under the care of the College and carefully selected host families attend school and participate in the everyday Australian lifestyle. Families of language students are given first preference in applying to host. The experience is always a positive one which benefits, not only the language skills of the Australian host sister but also the personal enrichment of all those involved.
Language
The Language Club meets once a week either during a lunch break or after school. Its primary focus is to compliment the classroom program by providing extra tutoring and extension activities to language students. The language Club also caters to those students who, having no background in the target language, are still keen to learn basic language skills and vocabulary. This academic focus, coupled with foreign films and a sprinkling of cultural activities makes the Language Club an attractive option for students.
National State Competition
For those who wish to be challenged further, opportunities to participate in National and State Competitions are available. Students are registered and thoroughly prepared for each competition.
Enrichment Activities
In learning a language, it is important to provide students with ‘real life’ situations where what has been learnt can be applied beyond the walls of the classroom. In achieving this aim the students are exposed to conversation workshops and preparation camps in conjunction with language students from other schools as well as universities seminars and guest speakers from the target country. |
