Learning at SBC - Enrichment Activities - Law Mock Trials

The Francis Burt Law Education Centre conduct a Mock Trial Competition for all private and public secondary schools in Western Australia each year. St. Brigid's College has taken part in the competition for a number of years. The competition gives students an opportunity to take part in a minimum of three Mock Trials at the Central Law Courts in Perth in front of a judge or magistrate. Roles include solicitor, barrister, court orderly, judge's associate and witnesses. Students develop a great range of skills such as strong communication skills, confidence in addressing an audience, commitment and sense of responsibility as a team member. The competition also introduces students to the law, legal systems and the court structure. Students enjoy the spirit of competition with other schools immensely and the adversarial nature of the legal system. They are coached by a practising solicitor and so develop a solid understanding of court etiquette and questioning skills.
