St Brigid's College offers students the opportunity to study and Italian (Pre-primary - Year 12) and Japanese (Years 7 - 10). The courses are designed to provide students with excellent written and oral communication skills in the target language and the chance to be challenged and enriched by an array of co-curricular activities including:
- National Language Competitions;
- Annual Language Day
- Pen pal programmes
- The College’s Language Club,
- A wide selection of cultural activities.
One very unique and fantastic experience is that of the Student Exchange/Study Tours offered at the College. At Year Eleven students can apply to study in the fascinating country of Italy and reside in a home stay situation. In 2009, St Brigid’s College is also looking at travelling to Japan on exchange for the first time and experience school and home life in this amazing part of the world. Students also have the opportunity to host a student from one of these countries every year. What better way to learn a language than to have all senses immersed in its culture!

A language programme is never complete if not embedded with cultural activities. In a world where multiculturalism is alive and well, it is important to expose the students to a new way of thinking. Not only does this aspect help broaden their perspective but it also provides a cultural context for the target language. Students have the opportunity to participate in various cooking demonstrations, film festivals, guest speakers and language expos.
LOTE is not just the study of a second language. LOTE is the exploration and discovery of worlds within our world. It is the start of an exciting new adventure!
