Learning at SBC - Learning Areas - Health & Physical Education

The Health and Physical Education Department at St Brigid’s College focuses on a student’s mental, physical, social and emotional health and general wellbeing. Sstaff is passionate about fundamental fitness, improving skills and developing elite performers. Our excellent facilities include a large gymnasium, 25m indoor heated pool, dance studio, fully equipped weights room and several netball/tennis/basketball courts and ovals which accommodate; football, hockey, soccer and athletics.

In this age of childhood obesity, we at St Brigid’s actively encourage a ‘healthy mind, healthy body’ concept in both Physical and Health Education. We have developed many innovative programs such as; Bodyworks and Funky Fitness to encourage more students to participate for their overall well being and lifetime fitness, and participation in the ‘Sip and Crunch’ campaign with our Primary school students to encourage a healthy diet.

Students will participate in many different sports throughout their years at the College. We encourage and support the ‘smorgasbord approach’ thereby allowing our students to sample a variety of sports. This allows them to choose to participate for fun or excel in a specific sport.

Physical Education in the Primary school is co-ordinated by two sport specialists. Kindergarten through to Year 1 students participate in the PMP (Perceptual Motor Program). This program aims to teach the child perceptions and understanding of their world through movement and motor experiences in a fun way. Year 2 and 3 students focus on fundamental movement skills and progress to modified sports in Years 4–7.

The sports that are covered at secondary level include: Aquatics, Cross Country, Triathlon, Netball, Soccer, Atheletics, Badminton, Volleyball, Hockey, Basketball, Tennis, Softball, Footbal,l Rowing and Cricket.

Developing a healthy lifestyle extends to an extensive Health Education course covering Year 1 through to Yr 10. We focus on skills and activities that encourage our students to make positive informed choices about their body and their life.
