High levels of literacy are important if all students are to reach their potential. The College has adopted the nationally recognised K-12 literacy strategy for Catholic Schools in WA and has become a leader in the implementation of the RAISe program. Regular analyses of student outcomes in local assessments and in national benchmark testing reveal remarkable student progress, especially in the early learning years.
W e recognise that students’ language development is a continuous process and ensure that the scope and sequence of our courses build on existing skills and experiences of life. English courses at St Brigid’s are designed to offer a rich foundation in language from which to explore communication, culture and ways of thinking. Students are offered a challenging and stimulating range of language experiences using written, spoken and visual texts. They learn to create texts of their own and to critically engage with those produced by others.
An outcomes approach underlines the importance of having clear expectations for students and the need for teachers to reflect closely on and to adjust strategies to ensure that standards are met in Listening and Speaking, Viewing, Reading and Writing. Strong emphasis is placed on student-centred learning, integrating curriculum with other learning areas and encouraging students to use the latest technology in their learning experiences.
From 2006, an outcomes approach to learning will be introduced in Year 11 English subjects and this will continue on to Year 12 in 2007. The new English Course of Study is an exciting innovation which offers teachers the opportunity to design a learning experience for individual students to address areas of both interest and need.
The philosophy of English teachers is to create a learning community where we develop an understanding of language and the ability to use it effectively. This contributes to the personal growth of students and enables them to play an active part in society.
